travelogue / connecticut and boston

i feel like it has been forever since we have been back from the east coast, but really it hasn't even been two weeks. for our last week we went on a road trip through the east coast, we hit 9 states! on friday we left dc and headed up to new york for the evening. we only had time to get rice to riches and grimaldi's (our two favorites), and snap a few pictures of the city.

that night we finished the drive up to connecticut. we stayed with our friend brad in storrs, mansfield (where uconn is). it snowed all the next day, so we visited the school and had a cozy day inside. for some reason the snow didn't bother me quite as much as it did when i lived in it. we felt like we were having a white christmas in a homey cabin in connecticut.

the next two days we visited new haven, mystic and providence. we loved walking around snowy yale, it was such a beautiful place- i will do a whole post devoted to pics of yale. the pictures below are of a little place we ate lobster at in mystic. we showed up on a monday, which was apparently the worst day to go because all of the activities (the seaport and the aquarium) were closed! but, we did a quick yelp and found ford's lobster. oh my gosh it made the whole trip to mystic worth it, we were so happy! i got a lobster roll and jarm got fish and chips. we went to providence after, walked around brown and a local coffee shop and found an adorable antique store. but it was so freezing we left right after that. somehow i didn't get a single picture in providence. that night we made a really classy cheese plate and watched a christmas story. it was perfection.

the next day we went to boston, which we were soooo excited for! somehow we arrived just in time for the biggest snow storm ever. we went to the museum of fine arts where turner's slave ship is (causing total elation). the drive from the museum to our apartment should have been 15 minutes, but took three hours because of the snowstorm combined with rush hour traffic. we about died. we decided to treat ourselves to an extravagant dinner (that we walked in the snow to) that night to make up for the rough day. the next day we had some down time before our flight so we got cheesecake factory. the parking for an hour and a half was 25 dollars. what?? our first impression of boston was not a good one. we visited fenway park, froze our butts off and headed to the airport. we definitely need another trip to love boston like we should.

from my camera / the national cathedral

we are currently on our last east coast trip and have been having a blast staying with our friend brad in storrs, connecticut. after this we will be headed home for good! there will be plenty of pictures of this trip to come, but for now i wanted to share some pictures of the national cathedral in washington, dc. i loved visiting this beautiful place. we sat in on an evening mass and really got to take the whole experience in.

from my camera / great falls and mount vernon

these are some more pictures from when we had the car last weekend. we visited great falls, a national park in virginia, on thanksgiving morning. the falls were pretty spectacular, and i would have loved to do some hikes in the area had it not been freezing. it was a good chance to practice my tripod skills (as well as self-timed pictures skills).

the next day we went to mount vernon, finally. we had always talked about going because i feel like it is one of the things you just have to do, but it is hard to get to without a car. the place was filled with tourists (like us), so the experience was a little less amazing than it could have been. we actually never did a full tour of the house because there was such a long line to get in, and hoards of people makes us both edgy. we did sneak in to see the last parts of the house. the outside was beautiful. i love eastern style homes they are so much cuter than most of the homes in california. the archways that connected the main house to the side parts were to die for. clearly i could not get enough pictures of them. we also walked around the gardens, saw washington's tomb, went down to the boathouse on the river. it was definitely worth the visit, but i wish we had the place to ourselves.

ps. how cute does jarman look. i could not stop taking pictures of him that day (jarman and arches always get me). also, the very last picture is one of my favorite pics i have ever taken.

travelogue / annapolis

i hope all of you had a happy thanksgiving and a much needed break! our thanksgiving weekend was perfect and entailed lots of food and traveling-our two favorite things! we rented a car for the weekend and explored quite a bit outside of dc, crossing quite a few things off of our list. we spent most of saturday in annapolis, md. it was such a quiet and cozy town- perfect for a day trip. we loved walking around the cute main street, soaking in all of the views of the harbor, learning the history of the city, and eating some local treats.

we started out on main street and walked around all of the cute little antique shops and down to the harbor, hot chocolate in hand. we at lunch at chick and ruth's, famous for it's crabcakes and was on the food channel once (though it wasn't anything amazing in my eyes). we headed over the the maryland state house, which served as the capitol for a few months way back when. it was a beautiful building with an amazing dome and fossils in the marble tiles. then we headed to see the thurgood marshall monument, which jarman was ecstatic about. we also check out the local annapolis bookstore, a quirky place with maritime and used books.

we headed over to the maritime museum, housed in the old mcnasby oyster company building. it was a tiny museum where this adorable old man taught us about the history of oyster-catching in the chesapeake bay. as boring as it sounds, it was actually pretty interesting. in the surrounding areas there were millions of oyster shells that had once been hand-shucked by mcnasby's oysters. we also visited the us naval academy, and ran back to the main street to see the beautiful sunset. annapolis is only 45 minutes away from dc, and is totally worth a day trip. we loved our time in this quaint town.

from my camera / summer days

because we spent last thanksgiving break at a beach house. because jarman talks about how much he misses the beach and surfing every day. because i miss my sisters. because the weather has taken a turn for the worse in dc. because the sun is my best friend. because i am getting whiter and whiter. because my family is probably going to the beach today. because we are moving to california permanently (knock on wood) in less than a month. because summer should be the only season. because these pictures make me happy.
