fashion / a marie antoinette valentine's

IMG_0177.jpg

do any of you love sofia coppola's marie antoinette as much as i do? i remember going to see the movie with my best friend and being completely smitten- the colors, the parties, the shoes! if i could live in any movie, it would be in that one. the time period was a little nutty, but i wouldn't mind being marie herself (even if it meant having to be blonde!).

we took these pictures in my little sister's room with her hot pink striped wall and cute green bed. don't you just love it? the dress is a very old betsy johnson number that i don't think i will ever tire of. the fur is vintage, it was one of those things that i couldn't live without but had no idea when i would wear it. (i ended up using it for our engagements). wouldn't you love to spend valentine's in shades of green and pink eating chocolate in bed? you get the best of both world's: playing dress up and being lazy!

fashion / wear your heart on your sleeve

who is ready for valentine's day? (i'm not either, don't worry!). february is always jam packed for us- jarman's birthday is on the 8th, the valentine's is on the 14th, and our anniversary is on the 18th. lots of romance will be going on over here! actually, we usually keep our valentine's days pretty simple. well, we try to. the valentines of 2012 actually turned out to be a bit of a fiasco. we were getting married in four days so we said we weren't going to do anything for valentine's. i was actually planning to go out with my sisters for one last girls day before the wedding. so halfway through the day my little sister comes home with a present from her 'boyfriend', and i started thinking to myself how pathetic it was that we hadn't even gotten married yet and we had already lost the romance of getting little gifts on valentines day. i obviously threw a fit and started crying because how was i going to marry someone who doesn't get his soon-to-be wife anything for valentines day (even though i had not gotten him anything, soooo selfish). jarman ended up driving back to his house to bring me the little gift he had gotten me (some chocolates and a stuffed animal) and consoled my crazy side. he really learned a lesson not to wait until halfway through any holiday to give me a gift, and especially to not get me a gift at all, heaven forbid! that should tell you a little bit about the dynamics of our marriage and who is the bratty one. (yup, it's me).

i got this shirt a little over a year ago (for $12.99 at tjmaxx) and am so excited to wear it every valentine's season, but i can't bring myself to wear it any other time than the month of february. i got the skirt at the jcrew outlet, and the boots at anthro (both on major sale). how cute is syd and her fun balloons?

fashion / white winter princess

while things are freezing over on the east coast we have been enjoying a california winter. actually, i have been a bit confused as to which season i should be dressing/shopping for. i really want to wear a winter palette, but it's so hard when it is 80 degrees every day. i usually end up wearing brights and dresses and summery things, though i wish i wore outfits like this more often.

syd and i originally wanted to pair the glammed out sparkle sweater with a short purple leather skirt, but somehow i felt like the colored leather trend already annoyed me. or maybe it's because syd's legs are much longer than my stubs, so it was wayyyy too short on her. the tulle skirt is perfect. it adds to the light palette, gives more texture, and is a much more appropriate length. how much do you love those snakeskin booties? i have been made fun of for years (by my loving family) for them, but i still am totally obsessed. i got that fur jacket for christmas (it was $20 at h and m). we put my plum bobbi brown lipstick on her giving her an awesome contrasting color. and what did i tell you about that hat last week? i want to pair it with every outfit every day. this is probably my favorite shoot we have done so far!

fashion / museum appropriate

do you associate pieces of clothing with certain days or holidays? for example, this dress was my birthday dress three years ago. whenever i wear it i think of everything that i did on that birthday (which including going to school and grading tests until midnight, at least i looked cute right?). i got this hat for christmas, so it will forever be my christmas hat. i love this hat so much, i want to wear it every day. i feel like it goes with everything and makes everything look so much cuter.

on saturday we visited the getty with some friends. syd tagged along and i snapped some pictures of her in the really cool gardens and overlooking the amazing views. the getty is my favorite museum - architecturally. it was so worth the two hour drive up there.

syd is wearing an oneill hat, anthro dress, target belt, target leopard flats, and marc jacobs purse. i have had pretty much all of it for years, except my new cute christmas hat.

fashion / winter work wear

IMG_8133.jpg

Syd and I threw this shoot together last-minute on Sunday, when I realized I was leaving for the week and wouldn’t have any time to work on a fashion post. I dressed her in my church outfit. For some reason it feels like the perfect back-to-work, post-holiday dress. It shows that you are ready to work, but still like to party. If you are in the January slumps (aka depression from returning from your awesome Christmas breaks), dress up a little and remind yourself that work can still be fun and glittery.

For this outfit we paired my wool-scalloped skirt (from many years ago at anthro), with a new gold sequined shirt. We added a red plaid jacket that has lots of spunk and a bow (thrifted in London). She is wearing heeled booties, a tortoise Michael Kors watch, and a gold beaded bracelet. I didn’t have any of these clothes while I was in D.C., so I was so happy to have new things to play with/style. It was like coming to a whole new (old) wardrobe!
