from my camera / gettysburg

we visited gettysburg this weekend! it was beautiful, just at the beginning of fall. we learned a lot about the civil war. i really need to freshen up my us history, i only know what is happening in european art during the years we talked about.  luckily the whole park wasn't closed due to the shut down, only some parts. my favorite part was the old covered bridge- which is how most of the bridges would have been during that time. we drove through many of the fields where the battles were, including the field where pickett's charge took place (a battle which i wrote about for my eighth grade project!).we also visited gettysburg college and saw lots of old buildings that were used as hospitals during the war. some of them even have holes from gunfire still.

from my camera / baltimore

jarman and i went to baltimore last weekend and had the best time. we got there in the evening, and headed out to dinner and a baseball game. we ate seafood on the harbor, and made sure to get the maryland crabcakes that baltimore is known for.

the next day we got up and went to the baltimore museum of art. it was mostly under renovation, but their 19th and 20th century galleries were open, as well as some more contemporary rooms. they had an entire collection of matisse's drawings of his daughter, and some great morris louis works.

we walked down the main street, North Charles St., and ran into a book market that was going on- we found tons of books we wanted to bring home but had no cash!

next we stopped into the walter's art museum and were inspired by some amazing early 19th century french works. tell me you're not dying over that painting!

we walked around the harbor some more, ate at cheesecake, and headed back to catch our train back to dc. our train ended up being delayed, so we spent our hours that we had to kill planning more trips! we have so many exciting things coming up!

from my camera / valley forge

we thought we were going to philadelphia this weekend and would maybe pop on over to valley forge (the trip was orchestrated by the school), but quickly realized that we were spending most of our time in valley forge. we were definitely disappointed at first, but it turned out to be just fine. we learned quite a bit about the american revolution. somehow i can tell you lots of things and dates about the french revolution, but know very little about the american one, i feel like i need to study up on it. we are still planning to go back and explore philadelphia more, there is so much that we missed! here are some pictures from the weekend.

there was this awesome forest behind the place where we were staying. i never knew what an obsession i have with trees until i got a camera, i have hundreds of pictures of trees. they enchant me and i love them. oh and can you find the surprise rainbows in two of the pictures? i was so excited when that happened! i don't know why or how, probably a very scientific reason, but it makes me so happy. and remember me mentioning that i thought we would be in philadelphia the whole time? that is why i am wearing a flowy jumpsuit/onesie (why do either of those terms sound so weird? what should i call it?)

we did a tour of valley forge and got to go to george washington's house while the troops were stationed there. they had to build those little log cabins in the middle of december in the snow with no shoes and minimal clothing. the whole thing sounds miserable. i'm so grateful to have people who were actually willing to go through such lengths to make it possible to live in a free country!

i have just a few pictures from philadelphia, and will be sharing more of a museum we visited later this week. we also had a tour of independence hall, saw where the constitution was signed, and saw the liberty bell. luckily we got to put everything in context by watching national treasure on the way home!

from my camera / timeless washington

we love city life. it is the best. i don't why not having a car is so liberating. i love the metro, but i love walking places more. and i love that we can walk to anything from our apartment. most of what we have done has been just walking and seeing places. d.c. is great because it is such a clean city- the cleanest city i have been to (we don't go far from the center though). however, there are way more crazy people here than other cities i have lived in or visited. like crazy crazy.

on thursday we went to this lecture by three artists on their works that were hanging in the american museum of art. they were/are photographers, and the works that they were talking about were of american roads in the 70's. they were actually really inspiring to me in ways that i did not expect. i was just excited to hear from real artists, not thinking they would affect the type of photography i want to do.

i loved hearing their perspectives on our generation. they kept using the term 'face down', talking about how everyone looks at little screens all day and has little interaction with people or their environments. jarman and i have been trying to change that, trying to use our phones less when we are out. but it's kind of hard? which is so sad.

they also talked about the medium of photography and their inspirations. today i walked for about and hour and photographed everything that inspired me. today i am sharing some black and white images, which i don't normally do, but i feel like it shows the city in such a timeless way.  {most, but not all, of these images were taken today}
